The World's Oldest Aquarium Fish Has Died

Granddad circa 1933 or 1934 at the Shedd

Sattler told the Chicago Tribune that Granddad had been losing interest in his food over the past couple of weeks and exhibiting signs of a "shutting down" of vital systems on Saturday.

"Granddad was an iconic resident and made dark brown, slow moving fish extremely loveable", said the aquarium's Vice President of Public Relations Andrea Rogers.

According to the aquarium, lungfish, which can live to be more than 100 years old and are a protected species in Australia, have existed for almost 400m years and fossils show they have remained unchanged for over 100m years. According to Shedd, Granddad and a female were fully grown when they arrived in Chicago from the Taronga Zoo and Aquarium in Sydney, Australia.

The top Democrat on the committee said Kelly wasn't to blame for the order because he had little input. Kelly responded: "Not until the boom".

Granddad, presumed to be the world's oldest fish, passed away Sunday at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. It would also seem that Granddad managed to outlive most of his caretakers, and, up to this day, no one knows for certain the lungfish's age.

"Granddad lived a pretty relaxed life, enjoyed interactions with us, including gentle pats along his back, and loved to eat his leafy greens", said Michelle Sattler, one of his keepers. At a party marking his 80 anniversary at the museum, the Australian consul general presented the aquarium with a certificate that states, "Granddad exemplifies the tremendous relationship between the John G. Shedd Aquarium and the Government of Australia".

But Grandad is being fondly remembered for far more than simply his impressive age, which the aquarium estimates at close to 100 years. Approximately 104 million aquarium visitors saw the 24-pound lungfish over the years.

Ever since the lungfish was placed in its new enclosure, it managed to steal the hearts of its caretakers and tourist who would, more than often, swing by to see Granddad's gimmicks.

Granddad appears to have been a firm favorite for numerous aquarium's visitors.
