Here are the most traveled structurally deficient bridges in Colorado

Among the names on the list are some high-profile structures like New York's Throgs Neck, and Connecticut's Yankee Doodle.

An analysis of Transportation Department data released by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association on Wednesday reports that more than 55,000 bridges in the US have been deemed structurally deficient.

That's good for second behind Iowa, which again led the annual report with 4,968, also an improvement for the state from past year. Pennsylvania landed the number two spot with 4,506 structurally deficient bridges, or 19.8 percent of their total bridges.

The association analyzed recently released 2016 data from the National Bridge Inventory from the United States Department of Transportation, which says that nationally, almost 56,000 bridges throughout the country are considered structurally deficient. The part of I-95 that covers Olde Richmond and Fishtown was the most traveled in the state, with 208,978 daily crossings.

The report says Texas has identified 12,048 bridges in need of fix, which the state estimates would cost about $2 billion.

The report also calls out upwards of 1,600 bridges as functionally obsolete - meaning, in short, the design standards don't meet current guidelines.

However, human rights groups have said the workers have been exploited and forced to work under unsafe conditions. At the same time, the impetus for the rapid development of the infrastructure is the 2022 World Cup.

The list is based on Transportation Department data. Other heavily trafficked I-95 bridges in southwestern CT in the report include spans at the Saugatuck River in Westport and the Byram River in Greenwich.

The five states with the most deficient bridges are Iowa with 4,968, Pennsylvania with 4,506, Oklahoma with 3,460, Missouri with 3,195 and Nebraska with 2,361.

"State and local transportation departments haven't been provided the resources to keep pace with the nation's bridge needs", Black said.
