Karlie Kloss Apologizes For Controversial Geisha Vogue Spread

Kloss garnered a strong reaction

One photo features Kloss alongside a sumo wrestler and another sees the geisha-dressed model walking down the stairs of a tea house.

In each shot she is wearing a Shimada-styled Nihongami wig.

.

A New York Times's blog said the dubious spread was likely an homage to Richard Avedon's shoot of German model Veruschka von Lehndorff that appeared in Vogue in 1966.

The photos were condemned on social media for depicting Kloss in "yellowface" and for appropriating Japanese culture.

Evacuees allowed to return to homes near Oroville dam
Northern California officials on Tuesday lifted an evacuation order for almost 200,000 residents who live below the Oroville Dam . Last week, heavy rains and rapid snowmelt opened a gaping hole in the main spillway of the tallest dam in the United States.

She added, "My goal is, and always will be, to empower and inspire women".

After the images sparked an online outrage, Vogue removed them from their website. "I will ensure my future shoots and projects reflect that mission".

The March cover features seven models - Liu Wen, Ashley Graham, Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Imaan Hammam, Adwoa Aboah, and Vittoria Ceretti - from differing ethnic backgrounds, but who share similar facial features and complexions. In 2012, Kloss walked the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show wearing a Native American-inspired headdress complete with high-heel moccasins and fringed leather pra and panties.

Newsbeat has contacted Vogue but they are yet to respond.

It's not the first time Karlie Kloss of Webster Groves has landed in trouble for being part of something considered racially insensitive, but the latest controversy seems particularly ill-conceived.

She also shared another photo from the shoot on Thursday, with her body in full display as she and the magazine's other cover stars jumped around the beach.

While Kloss' recent apology is appreciated, it brought up an important conversation once again, surrounding the continuation of appropriation in popular culture, intended or otherwise - one that everyone should think about seriously.
