Baltimore Nabs Three James Beard Nominations

Shuai Wang has been named a semifinalist for Rising Star Chef- JONATHAN BONCEK

The category calls for "chefs who have set new or consistent standards of excellence in their respective regions".

Among the new faces this year for best chef: Midwest are Karen Bell, the chef-owner of Bavette La Boucherie at 330 E. Menomonee St.

No one was more surprised than Chizuko Fukuyoshi, who opened the restaurant with her husband Shigeru more than 40 years ago after moving here from Japan.

The James Beard Foundation announced its list of 2017 Restaurant and Chef Award Semifinalists, which included two Alamo City nods: Cured Chef Steve McHugh for Best Chef: Southwest and The Esquire Tavern for Outstanding Bar Program.

Pastry chef Megan Garrelts has been nominated for her work at the Midwest-meets-Southern-inflected Ryein Leawood.

Among the semi-finalists for the James Beard Assocation's Outstanding Restaurateurs award are Paul and Joe Bartolotta of The Bartolotta Restaurants.

Also earning recognition this year: Elizabeth Degener of Cape May's Enfin Farms, a semifinalist for outstanding baker.

Winners of the 2017 James Beard Media Awards will be announced on Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at an exclusive event honoring the nation's top cookbook authors, culinary broadcast producers and hosts, and food journalists at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers in New York City.

The finalists will be revealed in Los Angeles on March 15.

Judges culled the list from 24,000 online entries, whittling it down to semifinalists in 21 categories, including 19 local nominees. Nominations will also be announced live via the Foundation's Facebook Live video feed and in real time on Twitter.
