EU Parliament votes to impose visa requirements on USA citizens

The policy would be a direct "tit-for-tat" response to U.S. President Donald Trump's requiring of visas for U.S. visitors from Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Poland and Romania, all of which are European Union members.

The European Parliament has urged the Commission to take reciprocal measures against United States nationals over America's failure to lift visa requirements on citizens of Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Poland and Cyprus. The rules set a two-year warning period before action is taken - and because the initial warning to the US went out in April of 2014, it expired last year. The parliament wants the measure in place "within two months", and the commission is set to report on its progress by the end of June. The European Commission has until the summer to enforce the measure.

Following the parliamentary resolution, the Commission will have to make a legislative proposal for suspension of the visa waiver for Americans, which would have to be further approved by the Parliament and the EU Council.
