FCC to investigate AT&T 911 outage

Consumers will soon regain the legal right to unlock their mobile devices

Police issued a statement about 9:30 p.m. saying AT&T cell phone customers appeared to be able to get through on 911 calls after a brief outage Wednesday evening.

AT&T said the problem also affected customers in Georgia, Texas, Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Calling 911 for a non-emergency situation ties up important lifelines meant for people or property in immediate jeopardy or when there is a crime in progress. "We apologize to those affected", the Dallas-based company tweeted.

"Continued to work through this nationwide outage is the ability to actually text 911", Kagel said. "We will fully investigate this outage and determine the root cause and its impact".

AT&T, the second-largest mobile carrier in the US, declined to disclose any additional information about the outage, including details about its cause, when the issue began and how many of its customers were affected.

The spokesperson did not offer details on the extent of the issue or how many customers were affected.

Murray saved seven match points to reach the semi-finals in Dubai
The odds looked stacked in Murray's favour heading into the contest, with the Brit winning 12 of their 13 previous meetings. His win on Saturday allowed Murray to become the first British champion in the 25-year history of the Dubai tournament.

For some AT&T users the issue apparently manifested sporadically, while for others it was statewide.

Although AT&T announced the resolution to the outage, the company has not provided any explanation why the outage occurred, as of the publication time for this article.

The issue was not caused by 911 failures, but by as-yet unknown or unexplained AT&T problems. With both AT&T and the FCC looking into the matter, more details should surface shortly.
