Netherlands refuses landing rights for Turkish foreign minister's plane

The Foreign Minister of Turkey Mevlut Cavusoglu speaks during a visit of the booth of Turkey at the tourism fair ITB in Berlin Germany Wednesday

At a rally in Istanbul on Saturday, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan lashed out at the Netherlands, after Dutch officials banned a rally in Rotterdam in his support and revoked permission for Turkish foreign minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu to address expatriate voters there.

The foreign minister had planned to hold a Turkish expat rally in the run up to April's constitutional referendum.

President Erdogan reacted to the ban on his foreign minister by threatening to block Dutch flights.

"They do not know politics or worldwide diplomacy", said Erdogan and added, "these Nazi remnants, they are fascists" with the crowds booing. "These are the remains of Nazis, they are fascists", he added.

He also repeated the government's charges that bans on rallies are "fascist practices".

Mr Cavusoglu said Turkey would present a final text to the bloc on progress of the deal "and either it will all be cancelled, including the visa liberalisation and migrant deal, or it will all be implemented".

Elsewhere in Europe, Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern has called for an European Union ban on Turkish politicians campaigning for the referendum.

"If the Netherlands cancels my flight, we will impose severe sanctions on them that will affect it economically and politically", the foreign minister said in remarks in a TV interview on CNN Turk.

Mr Cavusoglu was originally scheduled to speak at a rally in support of a Yes vote in Turkey's upcoming referendum, which would give Mr Erdogan greatly increased powers.
