Murray will oppose, join filibuster against Gorsuch Supreme Court nomination

The Senate Judiciary Committee is holding another round of hearings Thursday on Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch, this time with 28 outside witnesses who will testify both for and against him, as two Democrats announced they're voting no on his nomination.

There are 52 Republicans in the Senate. Schumer said Gorsuch failed to convince him he would be "an independent check on a president who has shown nearly no restraint from executive overreach" or that he would be a neutral justice "free from the biases of politics and ideology".

Gorsuch has been compared to the late conservative Justice Antonin Scalia and faced criticism after claims from former law students who said the judge asked a class if anyone knew women who abused maternity benefits. It's known as the "nuclear option", rewriting the Senate rules by simple majority to kill the option of filibustering a Supreme Court nominee. He will have to earn 60 votes for confirmation. That rule change eliminated the possibility of a filibuster in the contexts of nominees to head agencies or to be judges.

As the leading Democrat in the Senate, Schumer's opposition to Gorsuch isn't surprising, but going a step further and saying that he would vote against cloture was the loudest telegraph yet of potential Democratic plans for a filibuster.

Republicans have vowed to change Senate procedures if Democrats do so to quickly confirm Gorsuch - but Schumer suggested they should focus instead on Trump's nominee.

Murray is a member of the Senate's Democratic leadership.

On Thursday morning, Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said his party intends to filibuster the nomination, the Washington Post reports.

She said there's an "absolute commitment that the findings will be made public and that they will inform all the actions". Earlier in March, Kalanick admitted he had to "grow up" after a heated argument with a driver was caught on video .

He pushed even harder in that direction in his interview with Politico.

Still, we have nine Democrats who said that Gorsuch deserves a hearing and a vote.

Gorsuch took questions for almost 11 and a half hours on Tuesday from the Senate Judiciary Committee, during which he presented himself as an independent jurist who would oppose Trump-favored rulings when he saw fit. "We believe that allowing cameras in the federal courthouse would open the courts to the public and bring about better understanding of the court and its important work", Grassley says.

Would a filibuster of Gorsuch be a smart move for Democrats?
