The Quietest Quarter for the Dow Jones Industrial Average in 51 Years

At 10:55 a.m. ET (1455 GMT), the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 33.91 points, or 0.16 percent, at 20,694.58, the S&P 500 was down 0.23 points, or 0.01 percent, at 2,367.83 and the Nasdaq Composite was up 3.28 points, or 0.06 percent, at 5,917.63. Nasdaq-100 futures were unchanged at 5,436.

The Dow slid 65.27 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 20,663.22. The Nasdaq Composite Index decreased 2.61 points, or 0.04 percent, to 5,911.74.

Friday marks the end of the week, month and quarter.

Crude oil prices were over $50 a barrel; almost 1 percent higher.

On the other hand, Nasdaq could post a gain of almost two percent while S&P 500 has the potential to close around 1.1 percent higher in the current week.

March has been mixed month for investors as they digested the failure of Healthcare Bill, led by U.S. President, Donald Trump. The rally has also benefited from a raft of robust economic data and a pickup in corporate earnings growth.

Meanwhile, incomes rose 0.4% after a 0.5% gain the previous month. While the COMP added 1.5% in March, its 9.8% first-quarter gain made it the index's best quarter since 2013. Consumer sentiment hit 96.9 versus an expected read of 97.6. Following this morning's strong inflation data, St. Louis Fed President James Bullard took a more dovish tone than his fellow central bankers, saying, "This is not an environment where the data is screaming at the Fed that you have to move".

Stocks in the United States and around the world ended a strong first quarter with a whimper as investors wavered amid political and economic uncertainty.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) spent the entire session trading lower, weighed down by a sharp decline for energy stock Exxon Mobil - even as oil prices recovered from earlier losses.
