Scotland makes official request for second vote on independence from UK

Scottish parliament backs bid for new independence referendum

The Prime Minister Theresa May has received a letter from Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, in it she speaks of a second independence referendum.

The Scottish Parliament this week voted in favour of Holyrood having the power to hold a referendum.

Nonetheless, Sturgeon announced that the Scottish government would seek to hold an independence ballot between autumn of 2018 and spring of 2019, before Britain had finalised its European Union withdrawal, according to the report.

Scotland's Nicola Sturgeon has formally requested a second referendum on Scottish independence.

At the time, the Scottish National Party leader said the "material change of circumstances" brought about by the Brexit vote justified the repeat of the 2014 referendum, adding "if the Scottish parliament gives me that authority then that should be respected by the United Kingdom government".

Scots rejected independence in a 2014 referendum by 55 to 45 per cent, but Ms Sturgeon says the situation has changed because of Brexit.

May's government has already said it will decline the request, however.

Scottish lawmakers have voted to seek a new referendum on independence, to be held within the next two years.

The PM is sticking to her belief that a vote in the next two years would be "unfair" on people in Scotland because not all the terms about life outside European Union will be finalised.

Mrs May has repeatedly said that "now is not the time" for a referendum and has ruled out any Scottish secession talks during the Brexit negotiations - or while the UK's new constitutional arrangements are bedding in.

The Scottish first minister said her mandate for another vote is now "beyond question", and warned it would be "democratically indefensible and utterly unsustainable" to attempt to stand in the way.

"I hope that will be by constructive discussion between our governments", Sturgeon continued.

"In anticipation of your refusal to enter into discussions at this stage, it is important for me to be clear about my position", Ms Sturgeon wrote in the letter, which was delivered to Downing Street on Friday.

Fifty six per cent also said they thought Holyrood should decide the timing of any future vote on Scottish independence.

Scottish Conservative deputy leader Jackson Carlaw said: "At the very moment we should be uniting as a country to get the good deal out of Brexit, Nicola Sturgeon is trying to divide us again".

Gibraltar's chief minister Fabian Picardo has warned against Gibraltar being used as a bargaining chip during Brexit negotiations. It hands Spain, which has long held ambitions to reclaim sovereignty of the territory, significant power over Gibraltar's future.
