Swedish authorities say truck attack suspect held

STOCKHOLM (AP) - The Stockholm truck attack suspect was a rejected asylum-seeker from Uzbekistan who eluded authorities' attempts to deport him by giving police a wrong address, Swedish police said Sunday while announcing the arrest of a second suspect.

"We know that the suspect had expressed sympathy for extremist organisations, among them IS", Jonas Hysing, chief of national police operations, told a news conference, using an acronym for the ultra-hardline militant group.

Police now say one British person, two Belgians and two Swedes were killed in the attack in a busy shopping district of the Swedish capital. In addition to the four killed, 15 people were injured, four of them critically, Stockholm County Council said earlier.

In Europe, vehicles have also been used as deadly weapons in attacks in Nice, Berlin and London over the past year and were claimed by Islamic State.

Four people were killed - 10 remain in hospital, including a child.

The 39-year-old Uzbek man is suspected of having driven a truck into a department store in the city on Friday.

Prime Minister Stefan Lofven and Crown Princess Victoria were among those to visit the site.

Thousands of people gathered in Stockholm's Sergels Torg plaza on Sunday for a vigil against terrorism. Head of the National Police, Dan Eliasson, said that the suspect had been known to the police.

The Swedish news agency TT said several people had been rushed away from the scene in ambulances, and live television footage showed smoke coming out of the department store that the truck smashed into.

"We must get through this".

IS also claimed responsibility for a truck attack that killed 86 people in Nice, France, in July 2016, as well as another that killed 12 people at a Christmas market a year ago in Berlin.

"We received intelligence past year, but we did not see any links to extremist circles", Sapo security police chief Anders Thornberg said.

The Ahlens department store apologized "for a bad decision" in a statement on its Facebook page. "We are thinking about the victims - their families and friends - and those who were injured", he said.

Two men had been arrested earlier on suspicion of involvement in the attack.
