Malala Yousafzai becomes youngest ever UN Messenger of Peace

Malala Yousafzai attends a ceremony with United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres after being selected a United Nations messenger of peace in New York

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday designated 19-year-old Malala Yousafzai from Pakistan as the UN's youngest Messenger of Peace. Yousafzai told the young audience that the fact that extremists tried to kill her and were unsuccessful was "clear evidence that no one can stop" her.

In 2012 Ms Yousafzai was almost killed by the Taliban for campaigning for girls' rights to education. If you do not stand up, change will not come. "If you want to see your future bright, you have to start working now and not wait for anyone else", Malala said.

Yousafzai became the youngest-ever Nobel laureate in 2014 when she was recognised for her advocacy of the right of all children to education.

Yousafzai is the youngest UN Messenger of Peace and the first one named by Guterres since he assumed office in January. The Pakistani activist had already been nominated for the distinction past year.

According to the Daily Pakistan reports "the ceremony will be followed by a conversation between Guterres, Yousafzai and other youth representatives around the world on the theme of girls' education".
