Putin says expects 'fake' gas attacks to discredit Syria's Assad

Lawrence O'Donnel's Wag the Dog segment

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu earlier in the day said the regime still had "chemical weapons capacity" as top diplomats gathered for G7 talks in Italy.

Russian Federation should end its support for "toxic" Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said on Monday ahead of a meeting of G7 foreign ministers in Italy.

As his administration used US intelligence to pressure Moscow over its support for Syrian President Bashar Assad, Russian President Vladimir Putin parroted back Trump's doubts about the reliability of USA spy agencies. "I welcome this renewed harmony".

The two leaders spoke about the crisis by telephone as the USA president thanked the PM for her backing of his military strikes against Syrian government forces last week.

Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven industrialized nations are expected to call Tuesday for a new worldwide push to end the war in Syria, but are divided on whether to threaten new sanctions or other tough measures to pressure Russian Federation over its support of President Bashar Assad.

Airstrikes on Syria might also send message to North Korea
Tillerson said Trump had accepted Xi's invitation to visit China and that they also agreed to upgrade a U.S. Liu focused instead on the need for a political solution to the six-year Syrian conflict.

Russian Federation said the military action crossed a "red line" and threatened that it would "respond with force" if there were more strikes in Syria.

The official said the presence of the drone couldn't have been a coincidence, and that Russian Federation must have known the chemical weapons attack was coming and that victims were seeking treatment.

The Kremlin previously refused to say whether Putin would meet with Tillerson in Moscow.

According to a statement issued by Russia's Foreign Ministry, Lavrov said U.S. statements that the Syrian government used chemical weapons "do not correspond with reality".

"To be clear, our military action was a direct response to the Assad regime's barbarism", Tillerson said at the G7 meeting in Italy.

Trump and May hope to persuade Russian Federation to drop Assad support
In that interview airing Sunday on CBS' "Face the Nation", Tillerson said Russians were not targeted by the strikes. He knocked the Obama administration for not responding to Assad's chlorine gas attacks after the deal was in place.

Alfano says Russian Federation should put pressure on Assad to stop the use of chemical weapons, and should join an worldwide push for peace in Syria. "We do not want to be associated with this, this is not where we want our country to be, '" she said.

But on Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson visited the site of a World War Two Nazi massacre in Italy and said Washington would never let such abuses go unchallenged.

"We say that this resembles very much the situation of 2003 and the war in Iraq", Putin said Tuesday during a press conference in Moscow. He said the United Nations should first investigate the attack.

United States strikes in Syria: Game changer or deterrent?

Tillerson was due to spend the night in Moscow before holding talks on Wednesday with his opposite number Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
