Google tweak aims to curb fake, misleading search results

Google has come under fire over the way it lists search results Yui Mok PA

Google is also setting new rules encouraging its "raters" - the 10,000-plus staff that assess search results - to flag web pages that host hoaxes, conspiracy theories and what the company calls "low-quality" content.

Google is adding a fact-checking tag to search results globally, its latest initiative to help curb the spread of misinformation and "fake news" the company said recently. It's a long way from flawless, nor do I expect the results will ever be ideal for every search.

Since the U.S. election, several companies including Google and Facebook have taken steps to deal with false information that looks legitimate being passed through their products.

Vice president of engineering at Google Search, Ben Gomes, admits that people have been trying to "game" the system - working against the spirit of the goal of algorithms - to push poor-quality content and fake news higher up search results.

Chappell finally wins on PGA Tour in 180th career start
He was just a shot behind Chappell's lead, but he parred there and drove next to a cactus bush on the 18th. He had three bogeys, a double bogey and three birdies on the outward nine, which led to a two-over 38.

Google's Ben Gomes, a veteran who's been wrestling with the intricacies of search since arriving as one of the earliest employees, believes it is now on the path to getting this right. Google was slammed for allowing fictitious stories-claiming he had won the popular vote instead of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former President Barack Obama was planning a coup-to rise above accurate and truthful reporting. "This can sometimes lead to results that are unexpected, inaccurate or offensive".

Additionally, Google is applying the same new parameters for its "auto-complete" function, which finishes search questions based on popularity.

Google has marked the issue as a different problem from existing fake news issues, but its motto stays the same - i.e. - to decrease the volume of such sources.

Google's second tool "Ranking Changes" is for ranking pages on content.

Microsoft just killed Wunderlist to launch a new To-Do app
This is an early preview so hopefully things will begin moving forward quickly to make features more discoverable and capable. Although the app is very simple overall, one key feature that makes it stand out is Intelligent Suggestions.

For the first time, users will be able to directly flag content that appears in Autocomplete and Featured Snippets in Google Search.

This giant focus group, which tests out changes in the search algorithm, has been told to pay more attention to the source of any pages rated highly in results, looking round the web to see whether they seem authoritative and trustworthy. Google says that while Search Rater feedback doesn't directly impact Search Ranking for individual pages, it does help them identify spots where the algorithm is falling down, and adjust accordingly.

Google is entering the fight against fake news.

Gomes added an interesting fact at the end.

Trump Signs 'Buy American And Hire American' Executive Order
As per several USA reports, a majority of the H-1B visas every year is grabbed by Indian IT professionals. There's an annual quota of 85,000 new H-1B visas (with 20,000 reserved for master's degree holders).
