South Africa's ANC accuses judiciary of pandering to opposition

Rachel Adams, one of the seven new MPs sworn in by speaker of the National

As happened in December 2015 when President Zuma abruptly fired the highly respected Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene, and replacing him by Des van Rooyen, a little known ANC backbencher, billions of rand have been wiped off the value of workers' pension funds.

Judge Bashir Vally gave Zuma five days to provide the records.

On April 24th, the Democratic Alliance (DA) party applied to the courts to force Mr Zuma to disclose the thinking and documentation behind the reshuffle, because it could not seek a legal review of the president's actions on March 31st without that information.

The records allegedly contain intelligence Zuma used as "an excuse" to fire Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan in the cabinet reshuffle, which also saw the sacking or replacement of nine other ministers.

Google agrees to pay $335 million in Italy tax dispute
The company says that it has paid its fair share in France but that it is cooperating with the inquiry. The French government reportedly believes Google owes it €1.6 billion ($1.8 billion) in unpaid taxes.

Zuma argued he was exercising his powers in terms of section 91 (2) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.

The ruling African National Congress (ANC) has called on Zuma to appeal against the court ruling.

On Friday, Kodwa said that reading into the Constitution that the President must explain his Cabinet decisions was "to use the judiciary to police political decisions and sets a very worrisome precedent".

In court papers, Zuma had said that the DA's urgent application to have reasons for the recent Cabinet reshuffle divulged was misconceived and without merit.

The presidency was not immediately available to comment.

"There is a another ratings agency that is going to make an announcement about whether to downgrade South Africa, and we are hoping that the court can play with us in reviewing the rationality as soon as possible", the party's James Selfe said outside the court. Zuma has not responded to the ruling yet.

Vally said Zuma must give "the record of all documents and electronic records...that relate to the making of the decisions".

In a bid to reassure markets, Zuma has said that he expected the addition of several younger ministers would add energy to his cabinet.
