Alisher Usmanov attempts £1billion takeover of Arsenal

Alisher Usmanov makes $1.3bn bid to take control of Arsenal FC

While Kroenke is the largest shareholder of Arsenal, another shareholder (Alisher Usmanov) is trying to buy out his portion of the team.

Usmanov now owns a 30 per cent stake in the club and has a personal fortune of around £11.2bn.

However, if the source is accurate in his belief regarding Silent Stan's pause at the offer, that represents a fissure in Kroenke's long-standing outright refusal of any offer made towards his shares in the club.

The Russian billionaire, who holds a 30% stake in the club, indicated to Stan Kroenke, the majority shareholder, he was willing to pay the sum to buy him out.

Uzbekistan-born Usmanov owns 30 percent of Arsenal League club and is said to have recently made the offer in a letter to American sports entrepreneur Kroenke, who controls a 67 percent stake. Kroenke has long maintained his investment is on behalf of his family for the long term and he sees it as being for generations.

Fan protests have mounted against manager Arsene Wenger with calls for him to leave after nearly 21 years in charge.

With one more round of matches to be played this weekend, Arsenal is poised to finish outside the top four sides for the first time in more than 20 years, denying them a place in Europe's elite Champions League next season. The approach, made last month, values Arsenal at $2bn.

Blues vs. Predators: Game 4 prediction
Former Jets and Bills coach Rex Ryan also was in the stands for his second game this series wearing a Predators' sweater. Pekka Rinne has led the way for Nashville with a save percentage topping 95 percent after seven playoff games.

Kroenke, though, could face a battle to win back the trust of those supporters who believe a change is needed in the boardroom. This includes the need to prepare a successor for Wenger, but in a very respectful way.

Usmanov has also called for an overhaul of Arsenal's commercial operations. "He is not at fault if we did not reach the Champions League", Wenger said.

Under Kroenke, Arsenal's Premier League trophy drought has continued.
