Oracle skipper Spithill tough on, off water in America's Cup

Sailing- America's Cup Finals- News conference

It's no surprise that the 35th America's Cup Match, a best-of-13 series which starts Saturday, sees Team USA and Team New Zealand clashing again on Bermuda's Great Sound, four years after the Americans' miraculous comeback - and the Kiwis' disastrous collapse - in San Francisco.

Both cartoons were drawn by San Francisco artist Elena Achilli, the first one apparently after Spithill skippered Oracle Team USA to one of the greatest comebacks in sports by winning eight straight races after being down 8-1 in 2013 on San Francisco Bay to retain the oldest trophy in global sports.

The first direct comparison of the 50-foot catamaran's performance has been much anticipated in the first-to-seven competition.

But the light winds also made for very tricky conditions which produced a heart-stopping moment for the Kiwis when they ran out of breeze and sank off the foils with the finish in sight.

"Before the first match I was very happy to be at the start line against Oracle, it was the first time for me and the America's Cup is my dream", he said.

Bertrand believes Burling is tough because of his dominance in winning the Olympic gold medal in the 49er class at Rio de Janeiro last summer with Blair Tuke, a Team New Zealand grinder.

Jimmy Spithill has labelled the next five days "the most important of the campaign" as Oracle Team USA try to pull off another great escape against Team New Zealand.

Spithill thinks the splashdown was caused by a problem with one of the rudders. "They're going to be there when we need them".

Races 3 and 4 are scheduled Sunday.

Two arrests made in Turkish embassy melee case, DC police say
Authorities also charged four other men - two Americans and two Canadians - for their roles in the chaotic skirmish. The State Department has said it had made its concern known to Turkey "in the strongest possible terms".

Spithill, an Australian, is trying to win his third straight America's Cup before he turns 38.

"I don't know what you're talking about", Spithill said, all mock innocence when asked about New Zealand media reports that two bow sections had been seen being carried from the Americans' base to that of SoftBank Team Japan, the vanquished would-be challenger with whom the U.S. have had a close working relationship.

And then, saying he had a “leak” in the Kiwi camp, Spithill upstaged Burling when he said the Kiwis would pick Britain as their challenger semifinal opponent.
