What really happened on May 26, police said, is that Randolph's 2-year-old daughter refused to get out of the vehicle.

The incident happened in late May, when she initially told police the children locked themselves inside the auto.

A Texas mother whose two children died of heat exposure after she left them in a auto was arrested Friday, local authorities said. Her story changed in subsequent accounts and she implicated herself on Friday. Officials said one of the kids refused to get out of the auto, so she shut the door to teach her daughter "a lesson", thinking they could get themselves out of the vehicle.

Randolph said she then went inside, smoked marijuana and took a nap for two to three hours.

The sheriff's office was alerted to the incident around 4 p.m., when temperatures outside had reached 96 degrees.

She has also admitted that she broke the vehicle window to make the deaths look like an accident, the release says.

A Texas woman is facing charges after her two children died as a result of being locked in a hot auto. The mother was said to have explained that she believed the children would be able to let themselves out of the vehicle.

In initial interviews with investigators, the Parker County Sheriff's Office says Randolph claimed she was in her home west of Ft Worth on May 26 when she noticed her children were missing.

At the time she said the kids were exposed to extreme temperatures in the vehicle for "no more than an hour". She even broke the window to rescue them. Her bond is set at $100,000, according to Parker County Jail records.
