Two immigration bills clear House, polarize San Diego's delegation

House cracks down on illegal immigrant crime with two BIG votes

Republicans relentlessly hammered a message of restoring "rule of law" Wednesday and Thursday leading up to the vote, highlighting crimes committed by undocumented immigrants and attacking sanctuary cities for lax policies they blame for the crimes.

The president is urging the Senate to follow the House's lead, saying that implementation of the policies "will make our communities safer". Goodnow also said that even if the law were passed, its fight would be "far from over".

Kate's Law would increase maximum penalties for immigrants who were deported or denied entry to the USA and are then caught re-entering or living in the country without legal permission.

It differs from a previous version of Kate's Law, which failed to advance in Congress, that proposed to increase the maximum prison sentence to five years - up from two - for immigrants who repeatedly try to enter the country illegally, among its other provisions.

Identifying himself as the son of a state trooper and supporter of law enforcement, Collins staked a strong stand against sanctuary cities. Kate's Law does this by increasing the penalties associated with repeated illegal entry into the United States.

Treasury announces new sanctions to increase pressure on North Korea
It cited a United Nations expert panel as saying the company has violated a ban on trade in luxury goods with the North. The Trump administration is increasing pressure on Chinese financial players amid growing tension with North Korea.

Barletta on Wednesday was one of four House members who met at the White House with President Donald J. Trump for a roundtable discussion about the need to pass legislation to strengthen enforcement of our immigration laws.

A separate measure would strip federal dollars from "sanctuary" cities that shield residents from federal immigration authorities. He hit a roadblock, though: Although his administration implied jurisdictions were breaking the law by not fully cooperating with ICE, that wasn't true.

He's ratcheting up the heat on the Obama-appointed holdovers in lower courts and their local political allies who stymie his efforts to stanch the flow of illegals across US borders and to deport those who come here and commit serious crimes.

California lawmakers are considering legislation that would prohibit state and local law enforcement agencies from enforcing federal immigration laws, and several cities have created funds to pay for lawyers for those facing deportation.

Known as "sanctuary cities", Newark, East Orange, Jersey City and other New Jersey municipalities have vowed not to cooperate with federal authorities.

Despite the House passage of the two bills on Thursday, Democrats are likely to present a roadblock in the Senate. An illegal immigrant from Honduras, Edwin Mejia, is wanted for motor vehicle homicide in the case, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. As such, they proposed legislation to impose harsher sentences on undocumented immigrants who have already been convicted of crimes.

"I knew Kate Steinle growing up and remain in touch with her family, who live in my congressional district", the Dublin Democrat said. It is named after Kathryn Steinle, who was shot and killed in San Francisco in 2015 by a man who was in the country illegally.

Immigrants who enter the USA illegally on three or more occasions could face imprisonment for up to 10 years, according to the measure.

"By flagrantly disregarding the rule of law, sanctuary cities are putting lives at risk, and we can not tolerate that", Ryan said. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan told Fox and Friends a vote on the two bills would come this week. Democrats said the bills represented "another step in President Trump's Mass Deportation plan".

The bills face an uncertain future in the Senate, however, where they could be subject to a Democratic filibuster.
