French Military Head De Villiers Quits Over Cuts

French president faces test of his authority as head of military quits

In a speech to senior military leaders gathered on the eve of the Bastille Day parade as President Donald Trump visited the country, Mr. Macron said a public debate on military finances wasn't dignified and he needed "no pressure or comment" to make good on his promises to the French people.

After his unbent take, many were angry with the president for publically aspersing the military chief.

President Macron faced the first test of his authority today when the chief of the French armed forces resigned after a bitter row with him over spending cuts.

Macron's election campaign outlined his aim to shave 60 billion euros off French public spending in the five years that he would be in office.

After General de Villiers's resignation, Mr. Macron endeavored to reassure ministers during a cabinet meeting that the proposed level of spending would be sufficient "to protect the country", according to a spokesman.

The deep cuts to the defense budget have angered the military because Macron has shown his support for the army, navy and air force since he came to power in May.

He will be Gen François Lecointre, Agence France-Presse reported, citing government sources.

In an editorial to be published in Thursday's Le Monde newspaper, Gen Desportes accused Mr Macron of "juvenile authoritarianism" and said that there was a sense of "betrayal" in the armed forces.

Police Release Sketch Of Person Believed Connected To Delphi Murders
It's been more than five months since the girls' bodies were found on a trail near the Monon High Bridge. This evidence was captured by German's cellphone about the time of her death, police said.

"If the Armed Forces chief of staff has an issue with the President of the Republic, the chief of staff will be changed", Macron added. He promised a big increase in the defence budget over the next eight years. When Gen de Villiers criticised the cut last week, it was at a meeting with deputies that was supposed to be off the record. "You can not publicly question a military leader like that in front of his subordinates".

The president also reiterated his promise to raise the defence budget again in 2018. That would mean a sum of €50bn - at least a further €2bn each year, unprecedented in France.

"I considered it was my duty to share my reservations, on several occasions, behind closed doors, in complete transparency and truth", Mr.de Villiers said in the statement announcing his resignation.
