Two Myanmar Muslim CSOs condemn Maungdaw terrorist attacks

The death toll from those attacks climbed to more than 100, according to Myanmar's army.

Pope Francis' appeal came after fighting between the Rohingya and the regular Burmese army on Friday in the city of Maungdaw, which is reported to be the worst since October of past year, and has prompted evacuations from the area of government personnel and of non-Muslims.

It's clear that the Myanmar security forces don't care two hoots about respecting the rule of law and protecting human rights and the fundamental freedom of civilians, even if it has to curb attacks from militants.

But sporadic armed clashes have erupted since October when a previously unknown Rohingya militant group staged a series of attacks on security forces, sparking a massive crackdown by Myanmar's military which the United Nations believes may have amounted to ethnic cleansing.

Soldiers have allegedly shot indiscriminately at unwarmed men, women and children during their intensified operations against Rohingya insurgents after three days of clashes with militants in the worst violence involving Burma's Muslim minority in five years.

"The soldiers and security forces were not able to go as far as they thought they could", Nyi Pu said.

A Bangladesh Foreign Ministry official told reporters Bangladesh was willing to work with Myanmar to crack down on the insurgents. She said gunshots and explosions could be heard and smoke could still be seen Friday evening.

Deadly attacks by the militants on border police have prompted a military response that left scores dead and forced tens of thousands to flee to Bangladesh.

While Myanamar's government and religious leaders look forward to the visit, Buddhist nationalists have said they don't want the pope to instigate issues over a persecuted Muslim minority group called the Rohingya.

Police said some of those detained had entered Bangladesh via the Ghumdhum border area - where the Myanmar forces had unleashed a barrage of fire just hours earlier.

The current compromise being floated by the European Commission is to limit posted-type work to a 24-month time frame. An estimated 500,000 of Polish nationals are employed by Polish companies in other European Union member states.

"This is an at-risk population", said Mr Smith, whose organisation had been receiving reports from within northern Rakhine of arson attacks on Rohingya villages and the killing of civilian men, women and children, though the ongoing lockdown there makes these hard to verify.

In more recent months the group has become less publicly Islamic, changing its name to the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army.

Thousands of Rohingya have tried to flee into Bangladesh, but Bangladeshi border guards are reportedly turning them back.

ARSA has also taken responsibility for the coordinated attacks on 30 police outposts and an army base that took place on Friday.

However, "the Bangladeshi authorities need to provide protection - they have a legal obligation not to send people back", he said.

Remains of missing found in USA destroyer damaged off Singapore
The fleet says in a statement Thursday that the remains were medically examined and will be returned to Malaysian authorities. The 7th Fleet said divers will continue to search flooded compartments inside the ship, where some remains have been found .

The Rohingya have long faced severe discrimination and were the targets of violence in 2012 that killed hundreds and drove about 140,000 people-predominantly Rohingya-from their homes to camps for the internally displaced, where most remain. Human rights groups accused the army of carrying out massive human rights abuses including killing, rape and burning down more than 1,000 homes and other buildings.
