Myanmar accused of planting landmines in path of fleeing Rohingya

Civil society protests against Rohingyas genocide in Myanmar

The recent violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state was reportedly triggered by Rohingya insurgent attacks on several police posts and an army base on August 25.

The plight of the Rohingyas has triggered broad worldwide condemnation of Myanmar and the country's Nobel peace prize laureate leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

However, the spokesman for Myanmar's leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, said on Twitter: "We have no policy to negotiate with terrorists".

The federal cabinet, which met in Islamabad with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in the chair has passed a resolution, condemning genocide of Rohingya Muslims under the direct patronage of state institutions of Myanmar.

At a time when leading countries from across the globe have condemned the ongoing persecution of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar's Rakhine state, India refused to sign a declaration at the World Parliamentary Forum on Sustainable Development held at Nusa Dua in Indonesia, on Thursday, because it urged all participating countries to "respect the human rights of all people in Rakhine state (the epicenter of violence against Rohingyas)".

Irma Knocks Out Power to More Than 1.6 Million Customers in Florida
Florida Power & Light Company said that almost 1.1 million customers statewide were without power Sunday morning. Rick Scott says at least 76,000 people are without power as Irma unleashes winds and rain on the state.

According to the United Nations refugee agency, 164,000 Rohingya had crossed into Bangladesh by Thursday.

Two Rohingya Muslim refugees urged the Supreme Court to direct the Central government to not deport them to Myanmar.

Emine Erdogan lauded Bangladesh for sheltering the Rohingya Muslims.

Refugees' accounts of the latest wave of violence in Rakhine have typically described shootings by soldiers and arson attacks on villages, but there are at least several cases that point to anti-personnel mines or other explosives as the cause of injuries on the border with Bangladesh, where 300,000 Rohingya have fled in the past two weeks. Ali accused Myanmar of running a "malicious propaganda" campaign to term the Rohingya as "illegal migrants from Bangladesh" and the militants as "Bengali terrorists". Many villages were burned and hundreds of people died, mainly Rohingya.

After being briefed by Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque on the Rohingya issue on Saturday, Russian Ambassador Alexander Ignatov said he believed that the situation would come up in the upcoming UN General Assembly in NY.

Hurricane Katia strengthens to Category 3
Katia transitioned from a tropical storm to a hurricane on Wednesday afternoon, and was a Category 2 hurricane as of 4 p.m. The quake, the strongest to strike the country in more than 80 years, killed at least 61 people.

Bangladesh, which already hosted around 400,000 Rohingya refugees, has faced a fresh influx of refugees since the security operation was launched.

"Even if all we get to eat is a plate of rice, we can burn a red chili and mix it and it will taste nice", says a woman in the Kutupalong refugee camp.

But in October 2016 a small and previously unknown militant group - the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) - staged a series of well coordinated and deadly attacks on security forces.

Hatred towards the Rohingya is profound, particularly among Myanmar's Bamar majority, making speaking up for them a potentially politically suicidal move.

In the short term aid agencies say they need a major global drive to provide for the huge influx of arrivals in Bangladesh's already overstretched camps.

Hurricane Irma thrashes several smaller Caribbean islands
Katia is 185 miles (295 km) east of Tampico, Mexico, and has maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour (120 kph). As Florida residents brace for Irma's wrath, two other hurricanes - Jose and Katia - officially formed yesterday.

"It is unfair for affected parties to inflict more cost to Malaysia to manage and to receive these people when they should be allowed fundamental and universal rights that have been denied to them", he said.
