Sen. Booker co-sponsoring Bernie Sanders' 'Medicare for all' bill

Sen. Elizabeth Warren listens to testimony on Capitol Hill in July

And another senator in my top 8, Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., last month came out in favor of the idea of "Medicare for all" - though not this specific bill (yet). Senator Bernie Sanders proposes to introduce his own single-payer bill on Wednesday. Booker and Gillibrand's endorsements in particular are yet another sign that support for single-payer is likely going to be the standard in 2020, no longer a deviation from the party line.

The Hill called the call for co-sponsors a "key test for 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls". And it suggests the dam is breaking when it comes to the Democratic Party embracing government-run health care, also known as single-payer.

Aside from the fiscal and economic disaster that would result from Sanders single payer system, it is political poison for a strong majority of Americans. It would replace private health insurance markets and have the federal government foot all medical bills.

For starters, it would be better if we referred not to "single payer" but to "universal coverage", since the latter is the real goal, while the former is just one way to achieve that goal (see Harold Pollack for more on this).

9 coaches go off track in 2 derailments in UP, Delhi;1 injured
Earlier in the day, seven coaches of Howrah-Jabalpur Shaktipunj Express skid off the railway track near Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh. On August 19, the Utkal Express had derailed in the Muzaffarnagar district, killing 22 people and injuring 156.

Though Gillibrand has not yet formally announced that she will co-sponsor the bill, sources told Mic that she will do so soon and has privately felt supportive of the measure for some time. That's when many Democrats will defend Senate seats in GOP-leaning states where liberal voters are scarce. Bernie Sanders that would guarantee everyone in the country is covered by health insurance.

"What we have right now as a country is where just because of your wealth will depend on whether you have healthcare or not", said Booker, appearing on NJTV, New Jersey's PBS affiliate on Monday.

A single-payer healthcare push has previously been well outside the mainstream for most Democrats.

That's not to say single-payer isn't gaining support elsewhere in the Senate Democratic caucus.

He went on to say that while access to health care has improved, "it would be terrific to have a simple, seamless system where, exclusively by virtue of living in America, you know that you will get the care you need". In the House, meanwhile, well over 100 Democrats have co-sponsored Rep. John Conyers' "Expanded & Improved Medicare For All bill".

Politically, the "Medicare for All" legislation gives Democrats a chance to present a strong contrast to President Donald Trump and other Republicans who spent much of the year trying to dismantle the Affordable Care Act.

After former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was selected as the Democratic nominee for president in 2016, numerous voters who had backed Sanders in the primary were skeptical of her progressive chops.
