Dead In Florida Nursing Home

Like many places in Florida, the nursing home has been without power since being whipped by tropical storm-force winds with hurricane gusts on the edge of Hurricane Irma.

Six people are dead at a Hollywood, Florida, nursing home left without power in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, officials said Wednesday morning.

"Parts of the facility itself were energised by FPL, I can't give you anything more specific than that at this point", FPL spokesman Rob Gould told a news conference, referring to the Rehabilitation Center of Hollywood Hills.

The number of deaths blamed on Irma in Florida climbed to 13 with the carbon monoxide deaths, in addition to four in SC and two in Georgia.

Staffer told police that Joe Paterno noted 'second complaint' against Jerry Sandusky
Sandusky was sentenced in October 2012 to 30 to 60 years in prison, essentially a life sentence for the 73-year-old. However, the police report was not written until after Sandusky was arrested in 2011, according to CNN.

Florida Health Care Association spokesperson Kristen Knapp said 168 nursing homes in the state lost power from the storm and were using backup generators to provide electricity to the facilities.

Gov. Rick Scott called on Florida emergency workers to immediately check on nursing homes and assisted living facilities to make sure patients are safe.

The owner of the nursing home also is an officer of Larkin Community Hospital, a medical center with a troubled history.

"I am going to aggressively demand answers on how this tragic event took place", Scott said in a statement.

Hurricane Katia strengthens to Category 3
Katia transitioned from a tropical storm to a hurricane on Wednesday afternoon, and was a Category 2 hurricane as of 4 p.m. The quake, the strongest to strike the country in more than 80 years, killed at least 61 people.

Local authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the deaths of the six residents staying at Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills. The causes of death are still being investigated. More than 300,000 customers in the county, or a third of the total, are still without power as of midday Wednesday.

Categorized as one of the most powerful Atlantic storms on record when it rampaged through the Caribbean, Irma killed more than 60 people, officials said.

The number of deaths blamed on Irma in Florida is at least 17 people now, in addition to four in SC and two in Georgia. Almost 3.8 million power customers in the state still lacked service early Wednesday as the mammoth effort to restore electricity in the often hot and humid region continues. They did not elaborate on what those conditions were.

In the battered Florida Keys, meanwhile, county officials pushed back against a preliminary estimate from the Federal Emergency Management Agency that 25 percent of all homes in the Keys were destroyed and almost all the rest were heavily damaged.

Hurricane Irma thrashes several smaller Caribbean islands
Katia is 185 miles (295 km) east of Tampico, Mexico, and has maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour (120 kph). As Florida residents brace for Irma's wrath, two other hurricanes - Jose and Katia - officially formed yesterday.

"The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills is responsible for the safety of their patients", the statement said. She said her sister could not talk or walk.
