Say Goodbye to Cassini: 13-Year Saturn Mission Ends Friday

Geysers of warm water from the sub-surface oceans of Enceladus

Cassini remained in orbit around Saturn, the only spacecraft to ever circle the planet.

NASA's Cassini spacecraft has entered the final chapter of its mission. At a speed of 76,000 miles per hour, Cassini will melt and vaporize in a moment's notice, forever melding it with Saturn.

And then there is Enceladus, a Saturnian moon a mere 500km wide.

His team will also investigate the phenomenon of "ring rain", when water vapor and ice grains from the rings descend into the gas giant's atmosphere. The huge outer "E" ring forms from the icy plumes that spray from the unexpectedly active Enceladus. Yet this strategy, if successful, will provide unprecedented opportunities for scientists to measure Saturn's atmospheric composition and interior structure. Launched back in 1997, a year before anyone had heard of Google and people still made music worth listening to (When did I turn into my father?) Cassini reached the Saturn system in 2004, and has since been a tour of the giant planet, its rings, and performing close up studies.

South Koreans brace for possible test on North Korea's public holiday
Moscow agreed to join in US -proposed sanctions against North Korea in August, but Putin now sees those sanctions as "useless". Moon may well be quietly admiring of Putin for saying things upfront about North Korea which he is unable to do himself.

By 3:30 a.m., Cassini will be gone.

Earl Maize, Cassini project manager at JPL, may have been the by-the-numbers guy in the presentation, but he also waxed poetic after stating that some 635 gigabytes of collected scientific data became part of almost 4,000 scientific papers.

"The scientific legacy of the mission will extend long beyond its fiery end in the clouds of Saturn". While many other options were considered - such as "parking" the spacecraft in orbit around Saturn - they didn't want to risk Cassini colliding with any of Saturn's moons. For over a decade, Cassini has orbited around Saturn 294 times, collected more than 600 GB of data, visited over a dozen moons and discovered at least seven new ones.

Scientists and Engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory said their decision to end the life of the spacecraft in this way is because of what they found during the mission, the ingredients for life on some of Saturn's moons.

9 coaches go off track in 2 derailments in UP, Delhi;1 injured
Earlier in the day, seven coaches of Howrah-Jabalpur Shaktipunj Express skid off the railway track near Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh. On August 19, the Utkal Express had derailed in the Muzaffarnagar district, killing 22 people and injuring 156.

Cassini's grand finale actually began in April, with a series of dives between Saturn's rings, close to the planet and its moons, providing unprecedented insight. Then, the temperatures will overcome the iridium-casing for its plutonium power supply, creating a flare just before the last evidence of Cassini is erased. During its final dive, the spacecraft will collect detailed maps of Saturn's magnetic fields and gravity which will reveal some interesting facts about the internal arrangements of Saturn which could solve the mystery of the fast rotation of the ring planet.

NASA scientists at mission control expect to lose contact with Cassini at 7:55 a.m. EDT. Why is the program ending now after 13 years? Those cameras, over the years of photographing Saturn, its rings and moons, created some of the most visually handsome images of the solar system. Which means that, while Cassini is soon to become one with Saturn, its scientific legacy won't be going up in flames any time soon.

When Cassini runs out of fuel it could accidentally crash into this pristine world, spreading earthly contamination. After nearly 20 years in space, 13 of which at Saturn, Cassini will not even leave a mark in the planet's clouds - it will simply go silent and fade away.

NASA recreated a Cassini image of a backlit Saturn using a collage of about 1,600 photos of people waving at the ringed planet as part of social media campaign in 2013.

I still can't believe that Dennis Rodman might actually save the world. "We ride horses, we hang out, we go skiing", he continued.
